Coby Autos was established by brothers Joe & Maurice Coby in 1987 as primarily a puncture repair and tyre replacement company. We quickly earned a reputation for stocking only quality tyres from both value and performance ranges and over our almost 30 year history we managed to keep our prices competitive while maintaining a standard of excellence in terms of:

  1. Puncture repairs
  2. Tyre testing / Assessment
  3. Tyre Alignment & Tracking

GENERAL VEHICLE SERVICING

Our location beside the Red Cow Hotel on the Naas Road combined with our early opening hours facilitated the rapid growth of our business. In the late eighties we began to branch out further into car / van / fleet maintenance. With bus, taxi and Luas services allowing quick and easy access into the city centre and elsewhere, our customers would drop their cars off, get to work, and return later in the day with their vehicles ready to go.

We were the first garage in the country to install a fully functioning car test lane and ramp. This ramp is very similar to that used by the NCT today. This allows us to properly test and setup car headlights / brakes / suspensions /tyres etc in a way that not many other garages can. As a result we became a kind of one stop shop for many prominent car dealerships who’d often have an issue that they couldn’t resolve themselves.

Adapting quickly to the changing nature of cars, we began to specialise is a number of areas, such as:

CAR TUNING / PERFORMANCE (MID TO LATE 1980S)

This was basically ensuring that your car / vehicle was performing at its’ optimum level. Customers would often describe problems such as a car “not running right” or being “very heavy on fuel” etc. We tested and serviced thousands of carburettors [device that blends air and fuel for an internal combustion engine] throughout the eighties and early nineties before they were replaced by Fuel Injection systems, where fitting and setting plugs and points was the order of the day.

FUEL INJECTION & EMISSIONS (LATE 1980S ONWARDS)

Fuel Injection & Emissions really kept us busy in terms of other garages and even main dealers – as when they struggled with something in this area, we were the go-to experts in terms of fixing the problem. Not only had we experience and specialised equipment to do it, we also had the equipment to test the cars once they were repaired. This became of paramount importance with the introduction of the NCT, as there now was an emissions test every vehicle had to pass.

Soon after this we started to see the introduction of the first catalytic converters. This opened a whole new era of electronic monitoring of emissions. We would have already been familiar with some of the systems from working on the Japanese imports, as they had emission regulations long before they were introduced in Ireland.

This gave us a huge advantage when the introduction of the NCT emissions test came in – and in this way we were able to hit the ground running. Now we are leading the way in Diesel Diagnostic & Tuning as the move away from petrol was secured with the introduction of the emissions based tax system. This has meant that there was an explosion of new technology in diesel required to keep ahead of the new lower levels in carbon nox and particulate emissions being imposed by the EU.

These ever changing dynamic diesel systems will keep us busy for the foreseeable future as we make yet another transition into electronic and autonomous vehicles.

DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTERS [DPFS] & REMAPPING (2000S ONWARDS)

In more recent times we are specialising in diesels and diesel performance / injection systems – and particularly in the whole area of Diesel Particulate Filters [DPFs]

What is a Diesel Particulate Filter / Why is this important?

A DPF – or Diesel Particulate Filter – is a filter built into modern diesel cars that prevents small soot particles being released into the atmosphere. It is a part of your cars’ exhaust system. As with any filter it needs emptying periodically and generally speaking this happens automatically by burning up the particles in a process called regeneration. DPFs have been fitted to most diesel cars for almost a decade and, because they need high temperatures to regenerate, low mileage stop-start motoring can cause them to become blocked. Where this happens – if ignored – expensive engine damage can occur.
