In the mid-eighties, Maurice Coby began a small garage business on the Naas Road. Initially focussing on new / used tyres sales and puncture repairs, Maurice quickly earned a reputation for providing a top class service at competitive prices – and as a result the business grew steadily.

Being ideally located on the busy Naas Road was a real advantage and as the business flourished, Maurice began to offer some light servicing facilities as well. While customers were having their tyres repaired or changed, they could also then have their oil and water checked, their wheels balanced, and so on.

In the early days, the premises Coby Autos now calls home was too large for Maurice alone – so part of the building was sub-let to a mechanic. When that mechanic moved on Maurice came together with his brother Joe to seize the opportunity to grow the business by taking the next logical step.

Coby Autos was established in 1987, quickly becoming a fully functioning car / van servicing and repair shop. They grew their staff – hiring their own mechanics and invested in the latest technologies and equipment and the rest as they say, is history.

Joe Coby – Co-Founder of Coby Autos

Joe began his career in the car service industry working in a petrol station as a young thirteen year old. He was there during the Petrol Strike of the 1970s. At that time, petrol was so scarce that a petrol station that might’ve taken a delivery of petrol at 3am in the morning could have queues of anxious or irate customers lining up around the block 5 minutes later. As such he was usually the first person in and the last person to leave.

Cars and particularly car electrics / electronics was a passion for Joe and he quickly became expert in all areas of mechanics – particularly performance tweaking with a view to getting the best out of cars of all types. Part of this passion was fuelled by both Joe and Maurice’s keen interest in rallying, and for a time they owned their own rally cars and competed in various track day events at Mondello Park.

Joe is our resident diagnostic and performance enhancing expert. There isn’t very much he doesn’t know about engine performance, emissions, DPFs, tuning, or indeed any other aspect of car servicing. He (along with all our staff) is constantly upskilling, and sees the next big thing in car servicing / repair being 3D printing – where garages will begin to print replacement parts on site. Watch out for his posts on our blog page.

David Coby of Coby Autos

David Coby is the first of the next generation of Coby Autos. From a young age David would accompany his father into the garage on weekends and over his primary school summer holidays. Initially thinking that this was just a good way to earn some money when out of school, David showed a real flair and keen interest in all things car related.

On leaving school years later David completed a four year apprenticeship and became a full time member of staff in 2008, and since then has constantly upskilled to keep abreast of all the latest developments in car systems and technology.
