What is the NCT?

The National Car Test (NCT) is a two-yearly check of basic requirements on cars under ten years old, or annually for older cars, assessing components which are visible and accessible.

Is it the same as a car service?

No, it’s just a list of checks that say your car is or isn’t safe, and highlights any work that needs doing to keep or make it safe. It doesn’t replace, or claim to replace, the owner’s responsibility to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy at all times, or the regular maintenance that a mechanic may need to carry out on the vehicle. Any defects found must be repaired, and the vehicle must pass a re-test before the vehicle owner will be issued with an NCT Certificate.

What if my car fails its NCT?

If your vehicle fails its NCT, you will be issued with a Failure Report, which will list each part that failed, along with the reason for failure, categorised by severity.

• Dangerous (D) items are a serious safety risk and mean the car should not be driven. It’s advisable to get your car transported to a garage to get the repairs done.
• Major (M) items are things that must be repaired before your car is retested.
• Minor (Advisory) items are noted but won’t have failed your NCT. It’s worth getting them fixed before they become bigger problems later.

Bring your NCT Failure Report to Coby Autos and we can handle the repairs. We’ll talk you through any that you’re not sure about, and advise honestly. When the work is complete, we’ll give you a receipt which you can take back to the NCT as proof of repair.

No, this is something you will need to do yourself. You can do it online at www.ncts.ie or by phoning the NCTS national booking line on 01 413 5992. You’ll need your reg number, your vehicle’s mileage, your contact details, and your debit/credit card – current prices are around €55 for a car.
